Since audiences first encountered it in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon has become an iconic ship in science fiction cinema, renowned not only for its significance in the galaxy far, far away but also for its distinctive design. Over the past four decades, young enthusiasts have eagerly attempted to recreate the ship in LEGO form, and LEGO has produced various builds in different sizes to honor this vessel. However, later this year, the Disney+ animated special LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy promises to completely transform everything fans know about the franchise, including a reimagining of the Millennium Falcon as The Dark Falcon. In LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, the entire Star Wars universe gets turned upside down when an ordinary nerf-herder named Sig Greebling (voiced by Gaten Matarazzo) discovers a powerful artifact in a secret Jedi temple. He is propelled into an adventure within a bizarre and fantastical version of the galaxy, where heroes are villains, villains are heroes, and the fate of everything hinges on Sig becoming the hero who can restore balance.

While many other LEGO sets can be assembled in a more modular way, progressing from one distinct section to another with several instructional guides for each part, The Dark Falcon features a single, comprehensive instruction manual that will challenge any LEGO enthusiast to find a good stopping point. It's both a blessing and a curse that once you begin building The Dark Falcon, you'll find it difficult to pause. Given the ship's design, one might expect to encounter numerous black pieces; however, it’s advisable to build this set on a light-colored surface, as the black pieces can easily blend into a darker background. The set includes 17 bags containing a total of 1,579 pieces and takes approximately seven hours to complete. The first six bags create the recognizable shape of the ship and assemble the familiar rear engines. It’s not until these initial six bags are finished that the ship starts to resemble any version of the Falcon, and the first five bags do not include any minifigures. If this is a family project, it would be wise for an adult to get a head start on these sections, as the more playful components are introduced starting with bag 6.

The ship's appearance is certainly recognizable, but it’s in bags 7 through 9 that fans will truly begin to notice the distinctive features of The Dark Falcon that differentiate it from the Millennium Falcon. With Rebuild the Galaxy not debuting on Disney+ until September, we have some time to wait before understanding the significance of these changes; however, these details generate excitement for the special. One standout feature of the build is a small enclosure made of translucent red pieces designed to hold the all-white Vader. While it’s purely speculation, it wouldn’t be surprising if this serves as some sort of prison cell for the figure, and the contrast of the white Vader set against the black interiors through the translucent red pieces is quite striking.Bags 10 and 11 not only finalize the exterior shape of The Dark Falcon but also add more narrative elements to the ship’s interior, introducing Darth Jar Jar and Bounty Hunter C-3PO. Longtime fans are aware that the Darth Jar Jar theory emerged after the prequel trilogy hinted at a darker fate for the Gungan, making the appearance of that figure in real life a thrilling moment for fans. Additionally, given how rigid LEGO bricks tend to be, achieving the smooth curves and how they seamlessly connect with various static pieces demonstrates the LEGO team's exceptional design skills, allowing even the most complex shapes to come together in seemingly effortless and intuitive ways.
